Looking toward Missouri S&T’s future

The Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory, or ACML, is $100,000 closer to reality thanks to a generous gift from the Sunderland Foundation, the charitable arm of Ash Grove Cement Co. The ACML will provide more than 12,000 square feet of research space for developing and testing new construction materials and methods. The ACML is critical to further development of our Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure signature area. It’s so important to Missouri S&T’s future that securing matching state funding for the $6 million facility is one of our three top legislative priorities. In addition, we are seeking an overall increase to our state appropriation and funding for the next phase of renovation of Schrenk Hall. To learn more about support for our legislative platform, contact Chief of Staff Elizabeth Smith.

Faculty notes

If you haven’t already checked out this inspiring story about one of our new faculty members, Dr. Laura Bartlett, please take a few moments to do so. Dr. Bartlett received her Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering and was recently hired as the Robert V. Wolf Professor in Metallurgical Engineering. However, her path from high school valedictorian to professor was anything but a straight line.

A fresh approach to an annual tradition

This year’s State of the University Address is around the corner and will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 4. Typically, this address features highlights of our successes and challenges. This year's will be different. After a brief update, we’ll hear from a panel of faculty, staff and students about how the strategic plan has impacted their S&T experience and what steps they see ahead. Please plan to attend!

Wheels up on the presidential search

The search committee for our next University of Missouri System president is getting closer to finding a new leader for our university system. Earlier this month, airport interviews were held with several candidates and the process is beginning to winnow down that pool. My thanks to Missouri S&T's Joe Boehm, past chair of our Staff Council, and alumna Cheryl D.S. Walker, co-chair of the search committee, for their service on this important committee. Thanks also to UM System Interim President Michael Middleton for his excellent leadership during this time of transition.

Did you know?

Missouri S&T now has two colleges, in part because of findings from our 2012 climate survey. That survey found that discipline, more than any other factor, influenced whether faculty, staff and students felt valued at Missouri S&T. Instituting the dual college structure in 2014 was designed to help address that impression. We’re conducting this survey again, and your perspective counts. The survey can be accessed here, but you must fill yours out by mid-October. Your participation will help us better understand the climate at S&T and how we can ensure the success and safety of all faculty, staff and students.

Warmest regards,

Cheryl B. Schrader, Ph.D.
Chancellor
