Jeff Schrader has been a practicing attorney for almost 25 years, most recently as Deputy Attorney General in the Idaho Attorney General’s Office. In this position he has served since 2003 as legal counsel to the Idaho State Board of Education, the public education policymaking board in the State of Idaho that governs all of the state’s higher education institutions and that establishes public education policy for the K-12 system. This role has been particularly enriching because it provided the opportunity for Jeff and his wife, Dr. Cheryl B. Schrader, Chancellor of Missouri S&T, to interact on a broad array of public education policy and content areas.
Prior to this, from 1996 through 2003, Jeff served as a public sector lawyer for a variety of government entities in the State of Texas. In the general counsel section of the District Attorney’s Office for Bexar County, in San Antonio, Texas, his legal practice included extensive business transactions work, especially related to tax incentives and economic development projects, and he was awarded the honorary title of “Hidalgo” by the Bexar County Commissioners Court for legal services provided in connection with those efforts.
He also served as Associate General Counsel for the Texas Banking Department in Austin, Texas, providing legal services related to a variety of state bank and trust company matters. This followed a stint in private practice at a boutique law firm in San Antonio from 1992 through 1996 where he specialized in bank and trust, corporate, securities, and real estate law. Schrader’s first legal position began in 1988, as in-house counsel for Exxon Corporation in Houston, Texas, where he practiced litigation, and advised the marketing department on antitrust and petroleum marketing matters.
Jeff earned a bachelor of science in business administration from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana in 1984, majoring in finance and with a minor in political science. He participated in an overseas study program while at Valparaiso in Cambridge, England, which enabled him to travel extensively through Europe. He earned his J.D. in 1988 from the University of Notre Dame, concentrating in business, corporations, and securities law.
Born and raised in Michigan, Jeff and Cheryl met while attending Valparaiso University in Indiana. Their son Andrew is currently following in his mother’s footsteps, studying mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech, and daughter Ella, 8, already aspires to be a scientist or engineer.
Jeff and Cheryl share a variety of interests, including reading, gardening and traveling.
